Sawmills and 2x4s
With the rise of the industrial revolution building materials became uniform and manufactured. Cutting timbers was now much faster and easier. Dimensional lumber could be produced in mass quantity and shipped all over the world. "Balloon" or "Stick" framing replaced timberframing almost completely during the 1800's as the primary building method. Although it ultimately uses more material; Stick framing is often cheaper due to the fact that the workers do not have to have a specialized skill or training.
